Cherryfield sits on the Narraguagus River in Washington County, in the sparsely populated Down East region of easternmost Maine, an area defined by its rocky coastline, tidal rivers, and vast stretches of blueberry barrens. The town prospered in the 19th century as a shipbuilding and lumber port, floating timber downriver from inland forests to be milled and shipped from its harbor, and its well-preserved Victorian-era homes still reflect that period of prosperity. Today Cherryfield calls itself the "Blueberry Capital of the World," sitting at the heart of the wild blueberry barrens that remain a defining feature of the Down East Maine landscape.
