The Story in the Margin

Photographer Eric A. Hegg captured this line of prospectors climbing the "Golden Stairs" of the Chilkoot Pass during the winter of 1897–98, at the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. Canada's North-West Mounted Police stationed officers at the pass's summit and turned back anyone who could not prove they carried close to a year's worth of supplies, forcing stampeders to relay their loads up the icy steps in dozens of exhausting trips before they could continue toward the goldfields.
