Ciliates — Antique Natural History Print

Stentor is a trumpet-shaped ciliate, a single cell large enough to glimpse as a speck with the naked eye, that anchors itself to pond plants and sweeps bacteria and algae into its mouth with a spiralling crown of hair-like cilia. Cut or torn, even a small fragment of its body can regrow into a complete, functioning organism. Haeckel's 1899-1904 atlas Kunstformen der Natur devoted its Ciliata plate to Stentor, giving this humble freshwater protozoan the same ornamental symmetry he found in jellyfish and radiolarians.
