Édouard Manet made this lithograph, titled Civil War, in 1871, in the aftermath of the Paris Commune — the radical, short-lived government that seized the city and was crushed by French army troops in a week of street fighting known as the Bloody Week. Manet, who remained in Paris through the siege and the Commune, based the scene on a sketch made near the Madeleine church, showing a fallen National Guardsman at a barricade. He chose lithography, a medium capable of wide, cheap distribution, specifically to bring an unflinching image of the massacre to a broad public.
