Claude Lorrain etched this harbor scene around 1641, also known by its French title Le Port de mer à la grosse tour. It depicts a busy waterfront where men load goods onto small boats beside a large cylindrical stone tower, tall-masted ships anchored behind them and more sail visible on the horizon — a favorite type of composition for an artist celebrated for his invented, idealized ports. Claude spent virtually his entire working life in Rome after arriving from France as a young man, and prints like this one, made in both etching and paint, helped spread his influence across European landscape art for generations. Impressions of this etching are held by institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art in Washington.
Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.
