This panoramic ink-and-wash drawing, dated to around 1649–1655 and held today by the Art Institute of Chicago, records the view from the Sasso, a landmark rock roughly ten miles south of Civitavecchia on Rome's coast. Claude Lorrain appears to have worked directly from the site, using subtle brown washes to suggest rather than describe the sweep of land and sea, with a single shepherd anchoring the wide horizontal composition. It's a fine example of the calm, sun-warmed Roman Campagna views that made Claude the most sought-after landscape artist of his era.
Jacquard-woven as a soft, double-sided tapestry throw with fringed edges — a warm layer for the sofa or bed.
