Etched around 1637 in both a small- and a large-plate version — now held by institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Louvre — this print shows rustic figures dancing to music beneath a stand of trees while their herds graze nearby. It belongs to Claude Lorrain's genre pastorals, the lighter, sociable counterpart to his grander mythological and biblical landscapes, capturing everyday leisure in an idealized Roman countryside. That Claude reworked the subject across two separate plates and several states suggests how popular the composition was with collectors of his day.

I wanted something for the dining room that nobody else would have, and this is it. Every line in The Country Dance is crisp, even in the busiest areas. The value here is so good that I keep expecting to find the catch. Our farmhouse has a lot of empty space and this filled some of it nicely.
