The Story in the Margin
This 1663 etching, held by the National Gallery of Art (Rosenwald Collection), the Art Institute of Chicago, and Princeton University Art Museum among others, presents a low, sweeping view of the Roman Campagna with goats resting in the foreground, tall cross-hatched trees, and a hilltop village on the horizon. Made late in Claude Lorrain's career, it shows his etching technique at its most refined, using fine linework alone to conjure texture, depth, and atmosphere in a purely pastoral scene, without any mythological or biblical pretext. Like The Cowherd, it treats humble rural life as a worthy subject in its own right.
Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.

Delivery was quick and the tracking actually updated. My friends recognized The Goatherd right away, which surprised me. It fits the space in the upstairs hallway exactly the way I measured it. It looks good in daylight and better under a lamp. I would tell anyone hesitating to go ahead.
It has completely changed how the nursery feels. The smallest marks in The Goatherd are still visible, which is the entire point. It has made every other thing in that room look better by association. Our winters are long and dark, and this has made the room feel warmer.
My only complaint is that I wish they made a bigger version. The tones across The Goatherd are even and deep. Nearly perfect, and I am not complaining.
I would not order from here again without a lot more information up front. Anyone who knows The Goatherd well will spot the difference right away. Two weeks after ordering I had to email to find out where it was. The credit they offered barely covered what it cost me to ship it back.
I am so sorry this reached you in that condition, and it is not the standard we hold ourselves to. Email us with your order number and we will send a replacement or refund you in full, whichever you prefer. Ines
