Claude Lorrain etched this dramatic marine scene around 1638-1641, depicting a storm at sea: torn-sailed ships battling heavy waves, a vessel driven onto the rocks below a coastal tower, and figures working with ropes on the shore, likely salvaging wreckage. It belongs to a small, tightly focused group of etchings Lorrain produced in the 1630s and early 1640s, before he turned his attention almost entirely to painted commissions. The composition shows the French painter's early command of atmosphere and natural drama, qualities that would define his landscape painting for the rest of his career. Impressions are held in institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the National Gallery of Art.
