“The Tempest” is Claude Lorrain's earliest dated etching, made in 1630, showing a storm-tossed coastal sea with ships caught in the swell. Made near the start of his career, before the confident, luminous style of his mature paintings had fully emerged, the print is a rawer, more experimental work than the landscapes for which Lorrain later became famous. Even so, it marks the first step in a printmaking practice that Lorrain, who spent most of his life working in Rome, would return to throughout his career. The etching survives in impressions held by institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Gallery of Art.
Jacquard-woven both sides in soft, durable yarn; insert included.
