Claude Lorrain painted this sweeping, imagined view of Delphi in 1673, one of his late works, for the Roman collector Cardinal Carlo Camillo Massimi. Rather than record the Greek sanctuary's ruins as they actually stood, Lorrain reimagined them restored to their original grandeur, with a monumental temple crowning a rocky outcrop above a procession winding through the foreground. The painting reflects the idealized, Virgilian vision of antiquity that runs through Lorrain's late landscapes, evoking a serene, imagined classical world rather than a literal record of the site. The painting is on view today in the Art Institute of Chicago.
