During his London campaigns of 1900-1901, Claude Monet painted the Houses of Parliament nearly twenty times from a balcony at St Thomas' Hospital across the Thames, capturing the Gothic Revival building at different times of day and in different weather. Working from memory and imagination as much as direct observation, he built up the canvases over months back in his Giverny studio, chasing the fleeting effects of fog, sunset, and reflected light on water. The series is considered among the most radical and atmospheric of Monet's career, pushing landscape to the edge of abstraction.
