Claude Monet cultivated an elaborate garden at Giverny, and irises were among his favorite flowers there, appearing throughout his paintings from the 1880s onward alongside water lilies and the Japanese footbridge. This close view of irises reflects Monet's late-career tendency to focus tightly on a single group of flowers, treating color and form almost as an independent subject rather than a conventional garden view.
