"Rocks at Port-Goulphar" captures the wild, craggy coastline near the island's southern tip, rendered with darker colors and more turbulent brushwork than his earlier Seine and garden scenes. The Belle-Île paintings mark an important expansion of Monet's range into rougher, more dramatic natural subjects.
