Stacks of Wheat (End of Day, Autumn) — Monet Pillow

This canvas belongs to Claude Monet's celebrated Grainstacks series of 1890-91, in which he painted the same stacks in a field near Giverny repeatedly to capture how light transforms an identical subject through the day and across seasons. "End of Day, Autumn" captures the stacks bathed in the warm, low light of an autumn evening, their long shadows stretching across the field. When twenty of the series were exhibited together in Paris in 1891, they sold quickly and established Monet's serial method as a defining feature of his mature career.
