Part of Claude Monet's landmark Grainstacks series, this canvas captures the stacks in a snow-covered field near Giverny at sunset, the low winter light turning snow and stack alike into passages of pink, violet, and gold. Monet worked on several canvases simultaneously, moving between them as the light changed, to capture as precisely as possible how weather and time of day altered the same unchanging motif. The Grainstacks series, exhibited together in 1891, is regarded as the first fully realized demonstration of Monet's serial painting method.
