During his London campaigns around 1900-1904, Claude Monet painted Waterloo Bridge dozens of times from his hotel window, fascinated by how the Thames's fog and industrial haze transformed the solid stone structure into shifting veils of color. "Waterloo Bridge, Gray Weather" captures the bridge under overcast skies, its form nearly dissolved into the surrounding atmosphere of smoke and mist. Monet considered these London river scenes some of the most technically demanding of his career, reworking many of the canvases for years after returning to Giverny.
