Cologne — Antique City Map Print

Cologne was already more than 1,500 years old by the time European city-view atlases became popular, having been founded as a Roman colony on the Rhine before growing into one of the largest and richest cities of the medieval Holy Roman Empire. Its skyline was dominated by Cologne Cathedral, a Gothic masterpiece begun in 1248 that was not actually completed until 1880, meaning that most historic views of the city show it still under construction or with unfinished towers. As a free imperial city and a major member of the Hanseatic League, Cologne's dense, walled cityscape along the Rhine made it a natural subject for the printmakers of nearby Cologne-based publishers like Georg Braun himself, who lived and worked there.
