Common polypody (Polypodium vulgare) is a small, hardy evergreen fern native to Europe and Asia, often rooted not in soil but on mossy tree trunks, rock ledges, and old stone walls. Its blue-green fronds persist through winter, and their undersides carry neat double rows of round spore capsules, or sori, a feature long used to help classify ferns. Spreading slowly by creeping rhizomes, it colonizes shaded niches other plants cannot reach, making it a familiar sight in the hedgerows and woodlands of Britain and Ireland.
