As the capital first of the Byzantine Empire and then, after 1453, of the Ottoman Empire, Constantinople controlled the Bosphorus strait linking the Mediterranean and Black Sea, making it one of the most strategically vital cities on earth for well over a millennium. European city-view publishers were fascinated by its unique position straddling two continents, and by the great dome of Hagia Sophia, built as a Christian cathedral in the 6th century and converted to a mosque after the Ottoman conquest.
