David Bates (1840-1921) was an English landscape painter associated with the Birmingham School, known for open-air scenes of the rivers and woodlands of the English Midlands and Wales. He trained as a porcelain painter at the Royal Worcester works before turning to landscape painting full-time in 1880, going on to exhibit at the Royal Academy and the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Painted in 1889, “Autumn River Scene, The Brook” captures a quiet stretch of water bordered by autumn foliage, in the closely observed, naturalistic style Bates was known for. The painting is held in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
