David Lucas (1802–1881) was the British mezzotint engraver who worked in close partnership with the Romantic landscape painter John Constable to translate his paintings into print. This mezzotint reproduces Constable's brooding view of Old Sarum, the ancient earthworks of a deserted hilltop settlement and former cathedral site near Salisbury, its mound set beneath dramatic storm clouds. It was issued around 1831 in “English Landscape Scenery,” the series of twenty-two mezzotints Lucas produced under Constable's close supervision between 1830 and 1832. By choosing Old Sarum, by then England's most notorious “rotten borough,” abolished by the 1832 Reform Act, Constable was also picturing a landscape charged with the political debates of his day.

Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.
