The Story in the Margin

This finely rendered watercolor was painted in 1583 by the German artist Hans Hoffmann, who built his career copying the celebrated nature studies of Albrecht Dürer. Hoffmann based this sheet on Dürer's own 1512 drawing of a dead blue roller, matching its fine, feather-by-feather brushwork as a signed tribute to the older master rather than a forgery. Half a century after Dürer's death, his studies of the natural world were still considered a benchmark other artists measured themselves against.
