Ming-dynasty painter Shen Zhou made this album leaf as part of his Twelve Views of Tiger Hill, Suzhou, a series simulating a visit to the famous hill just outside his native city, from arrival by boat to the climb up to Cloudy Cliff Monastery. Tiger Hill, known as Huqiu, was already steeped in legend by Shen Zhou's time, said to be the burial place of the ancient King Helu of Wu along with the three thousand swords sunk beneath its Sword Pool. Shen Zhou, who turned down an official career to live as a scholar-painter, is considered the founder of the Suzhou-based Wu School of painting.
