Dixfield sits along the Androscoggin River in western Maine's foothill country, its water power drawing mills that processed timber from the surrounding forests into lumber, and later toothpicks, one of the town's more distinctive 19th-century industries. Like much of interior Maine, Dixfield's economy and settlement pattern were shaped almost entirely by its forests and the river that could move both logs and finished goods to market. The town's position along early stage and rail routes through the region made it a logical stop for the surveyors who produced Maine's detailed 19th-century county maps.
