Jacob van Ruisdael (c. 1628–1682) was the greatest landscape painter of the Dutch Golden Age, famous for skies that seem to breathe. Here a small village shelters among trees behind the dunes, the land rolling under towering clouds — an ordinary Dutch scene charged with Ruisdael's grave, weather-swept grandeur. It hangs in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden.

This was a gift for my sister and she called me the day it arrived. The smallest marks in A Wooded Village behind are still visible, which is the entire point. It looks like something you would find in a very good museum shop. The size is exactly right for the spot I had in mind.
