The Story in the Margin

Hiroshige's "Driving Rain at Shōno," the 46th print in his Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō series (1833–34), shows travelers scrambling for shelter as sheets of rain — rendered in sharp diagonal lines — sweep across a hillside. No such dramatic landscape actually existed at the real Shōno station; the composition was purely imagined, prized instead for how vividly it conveys the sensation of being caught in a sudden downpour.
