Australian photographer Frank Hurley documented Sir Ernest Shackleton's ship Endurance as it became beset and was slowly crushed by pack ice in the Weddell Sea in 1915, during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. The crossing of Antarctica the expedition set out to achieve was never made, but every one of the twenty-eight men survived nearly two years stranded on ice floes and in open boats — a story of leadership and endurance that gave the ship's name its lasting meaning.
