English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), despite its name, is native to the western Mediterranean — the mountains of northeastern Spain, southern France, and Italy — and reached England through centuries of cultivation that made it a fixture of the country's cottage gardens. Its name, like that of the genus, comes from the Latin lavare, 'to wash,' recalling the Roman custom of scenting bathwater and laundry with its flowers. The Greek physician Dioscorides catalogued its medicinal uses around 50 CE, recommending it internally for indigestion and headaches and externally as an antiseptic for wounds. Its narrow silver-green leaves and dense violet flower spikes, prized equally for fragrance and for their bees, made lavender one of the most beloved subjects of the herbal and florilegium tradition.
