Captain Linnaeus Tripe photographed the entrance gateway of the Minakshi Sundareshvara Temple in Madurai in 1858, while serving as official photographer to the Madras government. To capture the towering gopuram without distortion, Tripe used a wooden camera fitted with a rising front — new technology that let him work close to the tall South Indian temple architecture he had been sent to document for the East India Company's colonial administration.
