The Chikugo River, the longest river on the Japanese island of Kyushu, winds from the mountains of Kumamoto through rice-farming country before reaching the Ariake Sea. Evening views of the river, with its wide sandbanks and slow-moving current catching the last light of day, became a recurring subject for Japanese landscape printmakers cataloguing the country's famous rivers and scenic spots during the 19th century.
