The Story in the Margin
Hiroshige devoted nearly half of "Fireworks at Ryōgoku" to a night sky glittering with sparks over the Sumida River, where pleasure boats gather below Ryōgoku Bridge to watch the display. Made in 1858 for his final series, One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, the print captures a summer tradition that local restaurants had sponsored on the river since 1733 and that continued, with interruptions, for more than two centuries.
