On 20 July 1969, Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin pressed his boot into the lunar soil at Tranquility Base and photographed the mark it left, a simple engineering record meant to study how the fine, cohesive lunar dust held its shape. The impression is barely an inch deep, yet because the Moon has no wind, rain, or weather to erode it, this footprint and thousands of others left by the Apollo astronauts are expected to remain essentially unchanged for millions of years. Of all the pictures taken during the Apollo missions, this close, unglamorous study of a single bootprint has become one of the most quietly powerful symbols of humanity's first steps on another world.
