The Story of the Western Chamber (Xixiang Ji) is one of the most beloved love stories in Chinese literature, a Yuan-dynasty drama by Wang Shifu recounting the secret romance between the scholar Zhang Sheng and the chancellor's daughter Cui Yingying at a Buddhist monastery. Its scenes—stolen glances across a garden wall, notes passed through a maid, a lute played beneath a window—became some of the most frequently illustrated moments in Chinese art, appearing on everything from woodblock-printed books to porcelain.
