“Gateway Near a Landing Bridge” is a capriccio by Francesco Guardi (1712–1793), the Venetian painter whose loose, flickering brushwork gave the city's crumbling gateways and waterside steps a wistful, atmospheric quality quite different from Canaletto's crisp precision. Guardi trained first alongside his brother Gian Antonio painting religious works, only turning to view-painting and imaginative capricci later in his career, when his free “pittura di tocco” (touch painting) technique became his signature.

This turned out better than the photos led me to expect. I have wanted something by Guardi in this house for years, and Gateway Near was the right pick. It gave the mudroom the anchor it was missing. Our driver leaves everything at the end of a long gravel driveway and it still arrived in perfect shape. Good value even at full price.
It arrived two days after I ordered, which I did not expect. Every line in Gateway Near is crisp, even in the busiest areas. It looks right in a house built in 1920 outside Chicago. It has beaten every expectation I had.
I kept checking the tracking because I could not wait for it to get here. The clarity of Gateway Near makes it look like the original was photographed yesterday.
The subject was exactly what I was hunting for and the reproduction is clean. It looks good in daylight and better under a lamp. Nearly perfect, and I am not complaining.
