“Animal Folly” belongs to Los Disparates (The Follies), the final and most enigmatic print series Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) created in the early 1820s, alongside the haunting “Black Paintings” that decorated the walls of his own home. Goya filled these prints with strange, dreamlike and often pessimistic imagery that resists straightforward interpretation, marking a dark, private culmination of his lifelong fascination with folly, superstition and human irrationality.
