The Story in the Margin

Painted around 1806, this small panel by Francisco de Goya (1746–1828) tells part of a real, sensational story: the notorious bandit El Maragato, who had taken a friar and other travelers hostage, was outsmarted, shot and finally bound with rope by Friar Pedro de Zaldivia. Goya turned the popular tale — celebrated in songs and prints across Spain — into a series of six small, lively paintings made largely for his own pleasure. This scene is now held at the Art Institute of Chicago.

Printed with archival giclée inks on smooth, acid-free 220 gsm gallery-grade fine-art paper; available in multiple sizes.
