Maastricht — Frans Hogenberg Antique City Map Print

"Traiectum ad Mosam," Latin for "the crossing on the Meuse," is the old name behind Maastricht, the city this map depicts from a bird's-eye view over the river and its 13th-century stone bridge. The plate was engraved by Frans Hogenberg for the Civitates Orbis Terrarum, the pioneering town atlas he published with Georg Braun beginning in 1572, and shows the towers of the Sint-Servaas basilica and Sint-Janskerk rising above the rooftops. As one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, Maastricht had already been an important river crossing and trading post for over a thousand years by the time this view was made.
