Sweet osmanthus blooms in the eighth lunar month, exactly when the Mid-Autumn Festival falls, and its small golden flowers have long been steeped into wine and pastries as families gather to admire the full moon. The blossom carries a second, more scholarly meaning: because it flowers during the season when China's imperial civil service examinations were once held, plucking osmanthus became poetic shorthand for passing the exams and winning official rank. Legend reinforced the connection by having Chang'e, the moon goddess, present a sprig of osmanthus to a deserving scholar, linking the flower to both the autumn moon and the pursuit of scholarly success.
