George Inness, one of the most influential American landscape painters of the nineteenth century, often included small figures engaged in everyday rural tasks within his atmospheric landscapes, using them to give human scale and quiet narrative to his scenes. "Crossing the Ford" reflects this practice, set within the soft, hazy light and loose brushwork that defined Inness's mature style, a marked departure from the sharply detailed panoramas of the earlier Hudson River School.
