The Story in the Margin

Charles Willson Peale painted George Washington at Princeton in 1779 to commemorate the general's pivotal victory at the Battle of Princeton two years earlier. One of the earliest grand portraits of the future first president, it shows a confident Washington at the height of the American Revolution and helped fix the young nation's image of its hero.
