Before completing his monumental "Bathers at Asnières" (1884), Georges Seurat produced numerous preparatory oil sketches and drawings to work out the painting's figures, composition, and color, applying rigor to a suburban leisure scene that earlier artists reserved for history painting. This final study reflects that meticulous preparatory process, showing Seurat resolving the pose and placement of figures relaxing on the riverbank at Asnières, across the Seine from the factories of Clichy. "Bathers at Asnières" was Seurat's first major Neo-Impressionist statement, completed just before he began "La Grande Jatte."
