Georges Seurat prepared his monumental "A Sunday on La Grande Jatte" through an unusually extensive process of oil sketches and drawings, testing the composition, color, and placement of each figure before committing to the final large canvas. This oil sketch reflects that rigorous preparatory method, painted with looser, more visible brushwork than the meticulous dot technique of the finished masterpiece. Seurat's preparatory studies for "La Grande Jatte" are valued today for revealing the almost scientific working process behind one of Neo-Impressionism's defining images.
