Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is native to the tropical forests of Maritime Southeast Asia and southern China, where it was domesticated and cultivated as both food and medicine for well over two thousand years. Confucius wrote of eating ginger with every meal in the Analects, compiled around 500 BCE, and it remains a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine to this day. Its knobbly, pungent rhizome travelled west along the Spice Route and the Silk Road, reaching the Mediterranean by the first century CE, where Greek and Roman traders prized it as one of the era's most valuable imported spices. Its aromatic, jointed root and reed-like leaves made ginger a recurring subject in the botanical surveys that documented Asia's economically vital plants for European audiences.
