Piazza San Marco, the grand civic heart of Venice, was a subject Canaletto (Giovanni Antonio Canal, 1697–1768) painted at least a dozen times through the 1720s and 1730s, framing the Basilica di San Marco and its bell tower through arches and crowds of figures. Canaletto typically exaggerated the campanile's height and slenderness for dramatic effect, and his paintings of the square became treasured souvenirs for English aristocrats visiting Venice on the Grand Tour.
