The Story in the Margin
“Il Ridotto,” painted in the 1750s by Giovanni Antonio Guardi (1699–1760), depicts Venice's famous public gambling house, a glittering, masked gathering place that drew Venetians of every class during Carnival season. Guardi, trained in Vienna before establishing a workshop in Venice, painted the Ridotto's crowded rooms with the same lively, atmospheric touch he brought to his religious commissions, capturing a slice of 18th-century Venetian social life later also painted by his younger brother Francesco.
