The Story in the Margin
This etching belongs to the Capricci, a series of ten fantastical prints Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) made in the 1740s populated by satyrs, soldiers, shepherds and old men in fanciful dress. Tiepolo, the greatest decorative painter of 18th-century Europe and master of grand Venetian ceiling frescoes, used these smaller etchings to explore a private, dreamlike world entirely his own — contemporaries even compared his inventive etching style to Rembrandt's.
