This etching is part of the Capricci, ten fantastical prints Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) created in the 1740s, envisioning a strange, private world of soldiers, sorcerers and shackled figures gathered around funerary urns and ancient ruins. Tiepolo, celebrated across Europe for his soaring fresco ceilings in Venice, Germany and Spain, used the Capricci to work through mysterious, half-narrated scenes far removed from his grand public commissions.
