This etching belongs to the Capricci, ten enigmatic prints Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) etched in the 1740s, gathering soldiers, sorcerers, slaves and mysterious women around funerary urns in half-told, dreamlike narratives. Tiepolo, Europe's foremost decorative painter and fresco master of the Venetian Rococo, used these small, densely worked plates to explore a private visual world quite apart from his soaring public commissions in palaces and churches.
