The Story in the Margin
“Death Giving Audience” is one of the darker plates from the Capricci, ten etchings Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (1696–1770) made in the 1740s populated by soldiers, sorcerers and allegorical figures gathered in strange, half-narrated scenes. Tiepolo, celebrated for his light-filled ceiling frescoes across Italy, Germany and Spain, used the Capricci's smaller, shadowed compositions to explore mortality and mystery, subjects rarely visible in his grand public decorations.
